Zig-zagging Our Way in the World

So I have came across an article the other day on this business blog by Bill Taylor titled “Do You Pass the Leadership Test?”. I have found a great quote on leadership.

The true mark of a leader is the willingness to stick with a bold course of action — an unconventional business strategy, a unique product-development roadmap, a controversial marketing campaign — even as the rest of the world wonders why you’re not marching in step with the status quo. In other words, real leaders are happy to zig while others zag. They understand that in an era of hyper-competition and non-stop disruption, the only way to stand out from the crowd is to stand for something special.

There are so many metaphors for leadership, however, i find this very interesting because a zigzag is a continuous line, like a leader that leads others. I must say I am analyzing leadership through a symbol and the different analysis a “zigzag” can reveal on leadership. It is a line that reveals strength in different turns. A leader should be a strong and can pull through different obstacles and zigzag reveals the ups and downs of one’s experiences. I think that a zigzag is so interesting to use to depict leaders because it also brings up a good concept of union. A leader, which is a zigzag is a lonely symbol that represents nothing but a very discordant line. However, if a zigzag is continued, it becomes a harmonious pattern, though its shape is sharp and unharmonious. This reveals a good concept on leadership. A leader is not a leader without his team. A person can be a great professional individual, but an individual will always be overthrown by a group of minds. Everybody should keep in mind that one that can make relationships with others, are creating a powerful group of thinking. Leaders bring about change not with the mind and power of one, but the coming together of all minds.

I might be an over thinker that overanalyzes but everyone has their own personal abilities to understand leadership. This zigzag has become my way of understanding leadership and how to bring about this leadership qualities in mind, hoping to improve my own skills of leadership.

Some little things God has taught me

I have recently became Christian. It is a rather personal change in my life, and I have picked up a few little lessons myself due to this alteration in my religion. I am not here to preach on the beliefs of God or bombard people with my personal views. I have the upmost respect for all religions and ethnicities, therefore, my expression below is just a few leadership qualities I have concluded as an spiritual experience recently. So, as a Christian, we believe in God, God’s words.

I haven’t been in this religion for long, but I did learn a few things that might help my understanding of leadership.

Proverbs 16
We can make our own plans, but the Lord gives the right answer
Decision making is one of the toughest things to do correctly in life. Our decisions determine our future and our values. How can a leader, or a person, make a good decision? I know Christians believe that God have predetermined our fate, however people try so hard to control their future. What I learned is that, don’t try to control everything around you. Somethings will fall into place when the time is right. A good leader knows how to make decisions, but judgments should be made with the overall concept in mind. Our paths are determined, therefore, sometimes it is better to take a breath, and make judgments with our daily mindset. A good leader isn’t one that controls all decisions, but one that knows when to make decisions and when to let decisions be made by themselves.
2 Timothy 2:15
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Diligence is one of the values I have always believed in. Some people might not be as intelligent as others but intelligence is ingredients of a great recipe, however without the patient cooking process, the food will not taste as good. Not everybody has the skills and talents to be a great leader immediately, but it doesn’t mean it is impossible. Diligence is the key to understanding and becoming a leader, since not all of us are born natural leaders.
2 Corinthians 1:3-5
God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ.
We believe in God because we find comfort in him. He is a leader because he gives away himself to others. In my mind, God is an idea, that gives me a foundation to my values and beliefs. Therefore, a leader is similar. A leader is able to help others, so others can help more others. A leader gives strength and comforts others. I believe that great leadership relies in this mutual exchange or friendship/relationship, what you give away, will be given back in a different form.

the pain in the words of, “Just go win the game.”

Yesterday, there was an accident that happened during the collegiate basketball game between Louisville and Duke. Kevin Ware broke his leg and a gruesome injury occurred. The bone in his legs snapped and protruded out his skin when he fell near their bench. The coach and his team all saw the horrendous injury and frightened all into tears. His team shed tears of pain for Kevin Ware, for he showed excruciating pain as he laid hurt on the basketball court. It was the most frightening picture, and even myself, seeing through television could feel his pain. What is so overwhelming about this injury was the words of Kevin Ware as he was injured, he did not cry out for the pain, but used his breath to gasp the three words, “Just go win the game.”

Nothing is more heartfelt in those words since when Kevin Ware is in pain, he did not think of his pain as his first thought. He was so dedicated to the game that even his words was to boost the emotional situation of the team. He knew that the team was sympathetic and hurt from his injury, but he did not want to affect the teams physical and emotional state. His words of motivation and encouragement made the viewers and his team feel his undefeated and unaffected dedication to basketball. As a true fan of basketball, I am so sympathetic yet inspired of his tenacity. A good team player is one that is not just dedicated but is considerate of the team at all times.Basketball is a sport that relies heavily on teamwork, and though one is injured, it shouldn’t stop the team from moving forward. Kevin Ware depicted the leadership qualities of a team player, one that is devoted to the victory of his team and puts it above his excruciating pain. The team eventually pulled through this situation and won the game with Kevin’s words in mind.

I think it is very inspiring to see a team that is so close to each other, for tears were shed. Kevin Ware’s words given me the understanding of leadership because leadership is putting others in front of yourself. Knowing what is important to you and the situation, and how to improve the affect on others during a group work. Kevin Ware could have screamed out his pain, but instead, he used his few breath to encourage his teammates to recover from this emotional turbulence during the game. I have been in a few serious injuries due to basketball, and i know the pain that one could have. Therefore, I have understood the concept of leadership skills that appear in different aspects of life and how leadership skills can be seen through not just education, but sports and other daily routines.

A leader preaches, a good leader leads, a great leader breaks the tradition

A few days ago, I have seen a news on the Washington post on a recent news with the new appointed Catholic Church Pope, Pope Francis. I have never been really updated with news, however, this news made me feel touched to see the future of the Catholic religion under this humble Pope Francis. It is so inspiring to see that the future Catholic Pope, one that is usually very conservative, has shown his future leadership as a leader that breaks tradition! Nothing can be more heartwarming than to see that this religious leader has shown the character of a new revolutionized leader for the future of the Catholic Church. Even though i am not Catholic, I am so overwhelmed with the news because it has always been thought that the Catholic religion was conservative, and through Pope Francis gesture of love and respect, he paved his way and the way for the catholic church to be a good and grateful one.

Pope Francis was recently appointed as the Pope of the Catholic Church. There was a Mass held in Rome on March 28th, 2013 and it was Holy Thursday therefore a traditional ritual was held. The foot-washing tradition was held and usually it is the washing of the feet of 12 men. This tradition was “a symbol, it is a sign — washing your feet means I am at your service,” the Pope Francis said to the 12 people he washed. The foot-washing tradition is a symbol of Jesus washing the feet of his 12 disciples on the day of his crucifixion. Therfore, this ritual is a very spiritual one, and in the past, the past popes has washed priests, or just men. However, not Pope Francis.

Pope Francis washed and kissed the feet of 12 women, ranging from “black feet, white feet, and even feet with tattoos.” The ritual was held not in the usual place, but in the juvenile detention center where those 12 women were juvenile inmates. This ritual surprised all of the people because Pope Francis had the courage and love to change tradition, because he had a different vision for the Catholic Church.

His gesture inspired people from all over the world. As a religious leader of a conservative religion, he has shown that his leadership will be a different one. I have so much respect for Pope Francis, because he not only broke the traditions, but also attacked on the issues of women in religion. It is surprising for people because women were not usually allowed in this ritual, and Pope Francis did not care.

A great leader is one that does not need to follow the tradition to let them know what is right and wrong. A great leader like Pope Francis knows that in this generation, a Pope that embraces love to all, is helpful not to just the Catholic society, but all people. I have never been close to knowledge on the news of Catholic religion, however, this news gave me so much respect for their religion now. I think Pope Francis is an example of a great leader today, though he is just a ordinary Pope, for he has no generation number after his name (Pope Francis) it means he is not the descendent of another. He is an ordinary man, who believes not to stand upon his people but with the people. Unlike previous popes, he dressed down, payed his own hotel, and flied coach during travels. His leadership reveals his humble character, and a leader whom is humble, can spread his humble thoughts and character into the people. The people need a leader that does not stand above them, but with them.

Well said, Steve Jobs.

Everybody knows who Steve Jobs is. He is that guy that is rumored to have a close of the same outfit, and invented the iPhone. I am not going to praise on how successful Steve Jobs is in bringing the iPhone into our culture today because the iPhone is merely the product of a great leader. However, it is the leader that brought the iPhone into our society, and his influence to the society is so great that it has become embedded into our societal culture. He was able to influence the world with one product, therefore, he definitely understood the people and how to be innovative. He lead the company of Apple from ruins to the zenith of electronics, therefore, his leadership is definitely inspirational.

I have read the biography by Steve Jobs. However, i have never listened to Steve Jobs talk about anything other than the iPhone or iPad. Therefore, I realized it is time to understand Steve Jobs and hear what he has to say about his success and how he pulled through his trials and tribulations. From the video, he talked about 2 major factors that was crucial to success. He represented his strength as a leader through the firm tone of his voice and the definite feel of the words he expressed through the video.

He brought up 2 major points to success: 1) passion 2) being a talent scout

Jobs expressed the need for passion because life is a tough road. If you have the passion for it, you will have perseverance. He believed that leaders that are successful are those that loved what they do. The people who don’t love what they do have more tendency to quit because they are sane. The second point he believed is that people should have their eyes open and be a talent scout, someone who knows who’s talented. Being a talent scout means is being fast at determining who is talent and who is your team. He brings up the idea of teamwork as a key to leadership because, in order to be a leader, you have to know who to work with. He said that in order to make a company that will sustain itself, you have to find great people and suitable teammates.

I agree with jobs that perseverance is key because i believe everything will workout for everybody as long as they are hardworking. I strongly think that success is open to people that are open to a lot of paths. If you preserve through thick and thin, a lot of doors will close and some will open. Maybe not everybody will be great leaders, but everybody is a leader of themselves. I think leadership is not just crucial to being the one to lead the people, but also to lead yourself. It is similar to the saying, how can you take care of others, when you cannot take care of yourself. I believe that leadership is a skill that is developed not just through simply through understanding concepts of what is a good leader, but also with experience. Similar to what this video does, Steve Job tells us 2 points to success, however, not all can attain success just by these 2 points. Though we know it takes passion and being a talent scout, however, knowing a concept is different from doing it and having experience it. I am inspired by this video, by Steve Job’s words but inspiration can only but put into action when one really have the incentive to improve and experience. I have the motivation to be a better leader, because in the future i will be the head of a family company.

Steve Jobs has given me the ingredients to success, but it takes the skills of a cook to create a delicious dish.

Gandhi

Gandi and his leadership has been marked as one of the most influential leaders of history. Why is a leader from India so influential to the people? His leadership has stood beside Martin Luther King, Barack Obama, Dalai Lama, Al Gore, etc. Gandhi is influential because he used love and honesty to lead the people of India. This reminds me to the quote by Lao Tzu,

“A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves.”

A good leader is one that doesn’t distinguish themselves from others. Gandhi was definitely did not put himself above others, for he dressed in the simplistic clothing and lived just as frugal as others in India. Just by looking at him in this picture, you can barely distinguish Gandhi with his people because he was just as common as others. Therefore, people followed him because he was an ordinary man that believed that he could free India from the British Empire. His success with his leadership was that he had a clear goal, and used a non-violent approach to free the people of India.

I think from Gandhi, we can analyze that a good leader isn’t one that tells the people how to fight the war, but one that fights the war with the people.

Gandhi once said ,” You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”

He took the step of being the one to change the future of India. He did not need others to tell him what to do. When you know something should be done, do it. A leader doesn’t need the approval another, but a leader is one that makes the rules. His leadership was simply humanistic and heartwarming. His leadership was loved by his people and appreciated by the people around the world because it is true that a man with a heart, can lead the people with love.

Bosses are so bossy!

It is understanding to analyze the boss and employee relationship today. There is a reason why media portrays something in a certain way. It must be because it is a general or common depiction that is why it has been mocked in media. Why are leaders or bosses in a company depicted as mean, condescending, unfriendly people. The question is, do people really associate the idea of a boss with a sense of fear, and clear line between them? Why is it that pop culture and media depict bosses as bossy people!

Did the word “bossy,” derived from the relevance and description of typical “bosses.”

I can name numerous movies that depict bosses as terrible, manipulative and insensitive creatives. Why is it that media portrays bosses this way? I recently watched a movie called ,”Horrible Bosses,” and it is a comedy that depicts 3 terrible bosses of 3 good people. Nick has been working in a company for numerous years and has always been the first one to get to work and the last to leave. His boss, Dave, is a sarcastic, manipulative, horrible boss that picks on Nick on being 1 minute late to work. The boss poured a full glass of whisky at 7:00am and forces Nick to drink it, and then accuses Nick of being drunk and alcoholic. Nick has so much hatred for his boss that he made the decision to murder his boss. This depiction of hatred between the boss and employee relationship shows that there is a problem and stereotype risen between these two relationships. It is not uncommon to hear, see or experience the discourse between boss and employee, therefore, this movie has become a joke/comedy that enhances this stereotype of bad boss and employee relationship.

Now that we have noticed this problem in media, how can we improve the boss and employee relationship? There must be a problem that causes employees to fear the bosses, therefore the question is, what is the right way to be a boss? What is a good boss? What type of leadership is seen in a good boss and bad one?

There must be a problem with bosses and their leadership skills because it has caused a definite problem that is seen through not just media but the common fear of all. If a boss is nice, heartwarming to his employees, it might have good affect on the employees. However, it might depict the boss’s leadership as a weak one. However, when the bosses are condescending and strict, it will cause a bad relationship with employees. Which leadership strategy better? I think that leadership strategies is very complicated because it has numerous ties with how the company works. Leaders should know how to guide and lead their employees. Knowing that fear enhances the power and control of the boss, it creates more tension in the company. I think that bosses today have a distorted image because leadership strategy within a company is not an easy choice between being nice or mean. I think that this stereotype not only raise a lot of questions about the working culture today, but also how leaders today show their leadership skills, and apparently, through media, it is not a good one.
